Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces at Smile Up Dental in New York, NY are what we all think of when we hear “braces.” They’re the traditional metal braces we’ve all seen. Although there are many options for braces these days, including braces that are nearly invisible, there are still very solid dentistry reasons to choose traditional all-metal braces.

Traditional braces give better results and superior outcomes for people with severely crooked teeth or patients with significantly uneven teeth. As well, dentists and orthodontists feel traditional braces work better when fixing overcrowded teeth. Complex orthodontic situations require traditional braces. Traditional braces are not prone to staining, either. Modern metal braces are smaller and far less noticeable than those of the past. Archwires are sensitive to heat and can move teeth efficiently and with much less discomfort than the bad old days!

Variations of traditional metal braces include porcelain or ceramic braces. Their brackets are tooth-colored or transparent, but the wire system remains the same. Damon braces retain metal as a primary material but have a sliding mechanism that contains the arch wire, allowing teeth to move into their necessary positions. Lingual braces are metal, the same as traditional braces but are attached to the back of the teeth.

Considerations for Non-Traditional Braces

  • Traditional braces work for all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. Clear braces like Invisalign® only work with teenagers or adults. They don’t work with children.
  • Clear braces are expensive and work best with mildly uneven or crooked teeth. Severe orthodontic problems require traditional metal braces. Clear braces like Invisalign braces can become stained over time, especially by wine, smoking, and coffee. Other clear braces can stain or even become warped if mishandled. Given that they’re so clear, they’re easy to lose. Replacing an aligner set of clear aligners is expensive and not covered by the purchase price.
  • Traditional metal braces are much less expensive than clear braces.

As you can see, it’s a balancing act between traditional braces and the latest in cutting-edge orthodontic appliances. At Smile Up Dental in New York, NY we can help you make the right choice for you or your children’s teeth.
